Skills and work history

Terry has been finding and identifying wildlife since the mid 1970s. He has developed excellent field skills for the location of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Terry also has demonstrated expertise in the reporting component of environmental consultancy.

This expertise has been achieved through devotion in his personal life to acquiring knowledge of fauna and ecosystems and through completion of a science degree in Australian Environmental Studies in the late 1990s, adding 1st Class Honours in the early 2000s, and work as an environmental consultant, a rainforest and restoration ecologist and as a fauna surveyor for the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency (now the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection). He has also worked as a collector and identifier of aquatic macro-invertebrates, as a researcher on the effects of climate change on freshwater ecosystems and as a liasion officer with Indigenous communities.

Fauna survey techniques used by Terry include bird surveys, diurnal and nocturnal searches, spotlighting, searching for tracks, scats and other signs and the use of harp traps, Elliott traps, cage traps, pitfall traps, funnel traps, hair-tubes, call playback and surveillance cameras. Terry has conducted formal fauna surveys in a majority of Queensland's bioregions and has seen more than 1,200 species of terrestrial vertebrate in Australia. He has also conducted fauna surveys in Papua New Guinea.
